Harris County District Attorney Announces Successful Extradition of Man Wanted for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child

Caleb Diaz Mejia Extradited from El Salvador Following Arrest by Local Authorities in April

(Houston, TX) - Today, Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare announced the successful extradition of Carlos Isaac Diaz Mejia, 41, from El Salvador.

In January of 2022, the Houston Police Department received a report of a sexual assault of a child that occurred in the Sharpstown area of Houston. During the investigation, the victim made an outcry and detectives learned that Caleb Diaz Mejia sexually assaulted the victim. After a thorough investigation by law enforcement, Mejia was indicted by a grand jury in November of 2024 for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child Under 14. Before being taken into custody, Mejia – a Salvadoran citizen - fled to El Salvador.

Since 2024, the Harris County District Attorney's Fugitive Apprehension Unit has been working in tandem with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs and the U.S. Marshals Service to secure the arrest and subsequent extradition of Mejia from El Salvador to the United States. Mejia was arrested by Salvadoran authorities in April of this year at the request of the United States and is now in custody of local law enforcement in Houston. His case will be heard in the 182nd District Court.
