Support for Survivors

Your Rights

The Harris County District Attorney's Office is deeply committed to supporting survivors and victims of crime with compassion and care. Our mission goes beyond pursuing justice for offenders; our victim advocates work to ensure that victims are fully aware of their rights and are never left to face the aftermath alone. By connecting survivors with a wide range of resources, the HCDAO strives to help them heal, rebuild, and recover.

The Texas Constitution guarantees that survivors of crime are afforded certain rights under Texas law. If you are a crime victim or survivor, who needs to get in touch with the HCDAO about a pending criminal matter, your best point of contact is the Victim Assistance Coordinator or assistant district attorney who is assigned to the case. If you do not know who the assigned coordinator or attorney is, please contact Victim Services at 713-274-0250 or [email protected]

Protective Orders

A Protective Order is a court order that guards you from someone who has been violent or threatened to be violent. They can be issued to any person who has been the victim of family violence, stalking, sexual assault, and/or trafficking, regardless of their citizenship or legal status. Victim Impact Statement

A Victim Impact Statement (VIS) helps the criminal justice system understand the emotional, physical, and financial effects of a crime on victims and their families. By submitting a VIS, you offer a unique perspective that ensures decision-makers, such as prosecutors, judges, and parole boards, hear directly from those most affected. If you have a pending case with the District Attorney's Office, you may complete a Victim Impact Statement by contacting the Victim Services Division.
